bAzArt is an ephemeral event, a “clearance sale” of creations made by designers from Valencia and the world.

Its central theme : upcycling.

It brings together, for 48 hours, designers, artists, and creators who will sell, but also create live in front of the public, works from recycled materials and objects.

This unique event is open to the general public, to learn about the environmental impact of waste, discover techniques and ideas on recycling and the transformation of everyday objects, promote responsible consumption for Christmas shopping, but also promote Valencian designers and artists.

Three companies have initiated the bAzArt project :

AKIMODE is dedicated to the promotion of performing, plastic and visual arts in the Valencian community, created by Mickaël FAU and Edoardo IERARDI.

GALAXY FACTORY is a French marketing and communication agency, that aims to promote sustainable marketing and communication for companies. Created by Sophie GIRARDOT, Ph.D. in Social Psychology, M.Sc. in Marketing and Communication and M.Sc. in Journalism and Graphic Design.

Camille ESPAGNE is a freelance journalist, project manager and event organiser. She has worked on international top events like the Olympic Games, the Paris-Dakar race or Danone. She has been the head of organisation of the same type of event in Rio de Janeiro.

Mediterranean culture

The choice of designers would be made among those coming from the Mediterranean area (Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turquie, Libanon, Israël, Égypt, Morocco…)

History and inspiration

The event is inspired by the French event Braderie de l’Art, which has been welcoming thousands of visitors for 30 years in the city of Lille, France (World Design Capital 2020).

Camille Espagne, Event Director, has previously created the same event in Rio de Janeiro.

Location

The event will take place in the city of Valencia, Spain. We are inspired by the area of Cabanyal / Port of Valencia / El Grau, by places like Las Naves.

bAzArt would be given, for the duration of the project (June - December 2022), a dedicated physical space(an empty warehouse or factory) to develop the project and host all the events around it.

Its name : AlmAcen.

A big incubator of the event with multiple functions:

  • collect materials and objects as “Food for Design” pour the creators

  • allow designers to have a place to work on the creations they will sell during the event

  • host conferences, encounters, workshops, exhibitions… and press presentations from September to December

  • and of course host the bAzArt event in December 2022.

Main goals

  • to raise awareness and generate reflexions about the production of waste in Valencia and the possibilities that already exist, and can be created, in order to reduce their impact - notably through recycling and transformation

  • to create an educational place to host conferences, courses, encounters and documentary films about the waste problem, and existing ways and ideas to change our way of conceiving the objects of our everyday life, and consuming

  • to help people know how to recycle and repair their daily life objects, in order to prevent waste production

The event and the project also aim to :

  • promote the city of Valencia all around the world, and the actions the city takes to fight pollution and cope with the waste problem

  • promote the designers of the city, the community of Valencia and Spain.

The challenge

of our future

In a changing world, where climate issues are essentials, rethinking our consuming behavior becomes essential.

AlmAcen and bAzArt missions turn around the need to talk about the scale of waste in the modern world and its impact on the environment, and to show our ability to recycle instead of throwing away, transforming and creating new everyday objects, from materials and articles intended for destruction.

It also wants to evoke design from conception, or how to think about the end of life of an object from its birth.

The designers would be invited to focus on creations that revolve around objects, tools, furniture ... of everyday life, but also reinvention of lifestyles and consumption, of our habitat...

By opening the bAzArt event to the general public at the beginning of the holiday season, we also want to promote responsible consumption, by offering everyone the opportunity to buy gifts that do not generate a new consumption of resources.

An alternative Christmas market !

Food For Design

The operation to collect raw materials and objects to be recycled could be the subject of a city-wide public communication operation, a waste recovery campaign called "Food For Design".

Its goal is to collect the sources that the designers selected for the project will need, whether from local businesses, the general public, or local resource centers.

We also want to include the city’s staff in charge of collecting the city's garbage.

Re’Collect

We will create an ecological local label (Re’Collect) for companies who want to valorize and upcyle their waste through social, cultural and ecological action.

This label is part of the general project of citizen awareness, and responds to the urgent need to rethink our production methods.

Companies will be invited to participate in the event through donations of broken, unused equipment, demonstration items.

bAzArt also intends to create relationships between the actors of the label, the event, AlmAcen and the companies. Design students would collaborate with interested companies on common projects for the design of new objects.

bAzArt aims to become a regular event in December and be a part of the cultural agenda of the city of Valencia.

Design, art and culture being universal languages, bAzArt and Valencia could contribute to connect cities and countries towards a better cooperation on recycling and waste management.

Design for the senses

In addition to the main activity on the bAzArt event ( live manufacturing and creations market), other events will take place during the weekend :

Sight : dance shows (with costumes and scenery made with recycled materials), documentaries and films screenings

Hearing : concerts (with instruments made with recycled materials)

Touch : an exhibition called “Feelings”, set up with recycled sources

Smell and Taste : food trucks, offering food created with recycled sources
